Comprehensive Dental Care for a Healthier Smile

Greater health starts here

At Natomas Veterinary Hospital, proper veterinary dental care is a pillar of pet health. By age 2, most dogs and cats already show signs of periodontal disease. We see this as an opportunity to significantly improve a pet’s health and well-being.

As periodontal disease progresses, it often leads to:

  • Chronic pain and inflammation
  • Tooth and bone loss
  • Persistent infection

Routine veterinary dental care—including dental cleanings, exams, and X-rays under anesthesia—is the simplest and most effective way to protect your pet against periodontal disease and promote better overall health.

Our services

Periodontal disease develops below the gumline, making regular professional care key to early diagnosis and treatment. The sooner your pet receives proper dental care, the less likely they are to suffer from this preventable disease.

Dental cleaning

The dental cleaning, or comprehensive oral health assessment and treatment (COHAT), is similar to a trip to your dentist, but is performed under anesthesia for your pet’s safety. It includes:

  • Thorough oral cavity exam
  • Full-mouth dental X-rays
  • Scaling and polishing of the teeth
  • Removal of plaque and tartar below the gumline

If your pet’s COHAT reveals periodontal disease or other concerns, the veterinarian will contact you during the procedure to discuss further treatment.

Advanced oral procedures

Pets with severe periodontal disease, dental injury, and oral or congenital conditions may require advanced care. Depending on severity, treatment may be performed during the COHAT or as part of a separate procedure.

Common treatments include:

  • Tooth extraction (removal)
  • Dental abscess treatment
  • Periodontal disease treatment
  • Pain management
